The Challenge
Goalball is a sport for athletes with visual impairments. It is played by two teams of three people using a ball with bells inside. The ball is the size of a basketball but twice the weight, and the nine-metre goal extends the full width of the court. The object of the game is to throw the ball into the opposing team's net, while defenders attempt to block it with their bodies.
The sport that was once unknown to many despite its status as a Paralympic sport is becoming more familiar to people around the world. This increase of knowledge around the sport of goalball can be attributed to a variety of things, including the growth of the Paralympic and Blind Sport movements and the success of goalball at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. |

Goalball continues to grow in its popularity as well as participation numbers. But the ability to play in real game conditions is often hindered by limited access to decent facilities. Conventional goalball goals are very large and heavy. They are also difficult to store and set up which means players often make do with makeshift equipment – or worse still, no goals at all.
