Water polo players back in the game in Dubai

The tide is turning for water polo players in the Middle East as they gear up for a tournament in Dubai on Saturday 19 December.

After a quiet year for water polo in the United Arab Emirates due to Covid-19 restrictions, the fast-paced beach water polo event, to be hosted by Dubai Camels Water Polo Club, is a chance for players to get back into the game.

The tournament venue – at Breeze Bar and Grill on the Palm Jumeirah artificial offshore island that resembles a stylised palm tree – will transform into a water polo dream with the help of Packaworld’s portable field and Packagoals.

Peter Roberts, chief executive of Packaworld International, said he was thrilled Packaworld’s inflatable field and goals could help bring water polo to such a luxurious location, particularly at a time when the city’s public pools have been closed.

“It is great to see water polo continuing to thrive in the Middle East and we are pleased our portable water polo gear is helping to grow the sport by making it more accessible,” he said.

Usually an international tournament, the event will be kept local this year with teams from the Middle East competing, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

A larger international beach water polo tournament was planned for April, with 20 teams expected to participate, but with Covid-19 restrictions still in place, the third tournament will be scaled back.

The Dubai Camels Water Polo Club is a group of water polo lovers from around the world, with about 30 nationalities of men and women in the team.
